Internships are often misunderstood. Some believe they're only for big companies. Others think interns are just "extra help," or that creating an internship program requires too much time, money, or paperwork. But here's the truth: when done right, internships can be one of the most impactful ways to grow your team, develop future talent, and build a stronger workforce right here in the Lake Region.
At the Devils Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, we've seen firsthand the difference a well-structured internship can make for both the intern and the business. Interns bring fresh ideas, digital fluency, and a genuine desire to learn. And for employers, internships offer a low-risk, high-reward way to connect with potential future employees.
Myth-Busting: Intern Edition
Myth 1: Internships are only for big companies.
Truth: Any business, no matter the size, can benefit from an intern. Whether it’s a retail shop needing help with social media, a nonprofit coordinating summer programs, or a trades business mentoring a hands-on learner—interns can make meaningful contributions.
Myth 2: Interns aren’t worth the effort.
Truth: Internships require a little planning, yes—but the payoff is huge. A structured internship can build loyalty, improve your workplace culture, and help you find a great long-term employee.
Myth 3: Interns don’t do real work.
Truth: When you give interns real projects and a little guidance, they rise to the occasion. Interns can support everything from marketing and admin to event planning and tech systems.
Local Programs to Support Internship Success
Here in North Dakota, small businesses have access to powerful tools that make internships easier, more accessible, and more affordable than ever.
1. Operation Intern
Offered by the ND Department of Commerce, Operation Intern provides reimbursement for businesses hosting interns in qualifying positions. Eligible businesses can receive compensation to help cover wages.
This is an incredible opportunity to test-drive a future employee, expand your reach, and offer a valuable experience to a local student without bearing the full cost on your own.
2. ND Dept. of Commerce's Apprenticeship Program
The Apprenticeship Program helps businesses create structured on-the-job training programs in partnership with education providers like Lake Region State College. It’s ideal for fields like construction, healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing—but can be tailored to many industries.
Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to combine mentorship, education, and practical experience into a pipeline of skilled workers.
3. Technical Skills Training Grant
This grant helps businesses cover the cost of technical training for current or incoming employees—including interns! It's a great way to provide job-specific instruction or certifications that benefit both your business and the individual.
Start Small. Grow Big.
You don't need a full HR department or a summer-long curriculum to get started. Start small. Offer one intern opportunity. Focus on one project or area of your business. Ask yourself: where could you use an extra set of hands? Then connect with the Chamber to talk through how to make it happen.
We’re proud of the interns and students who have been with our office over the years! They’ve brought talent, energy, and meaningful contributions to our team.
If you’re ready to explore internships as a workforce solution, you don’t have to do it alone! Reach out to the Devils Lake Area Chamber of Commerce for help navigating programs, structuring your internship, or connecting with students and schools.
