Tell us about the Lake Region Public Library!
The mission of the Lake Region Public Library is to enrich our citizens and communities through expanding access to information, innovation, and inspiration, and I believe we do that in every possible way. Not only do we house a good-sized physical collection of over 38,000 books, DVDs, audiobooks, games, and non-traditional items (think extension ladders and day passes to Dockside), but we also offer a huge range of informational and recreational programming, accessible meeting space, and partnerships with local community service agencies to provide resources to library users. Whether that is Community Options being available once a month to offer assistance on a drop-in basis or Public Health hosting vaccine clinics during cold and flu season, the library truly is a hub for service as well as fun.
What is the Lake Region Public Library's favorite thing about being a business in Devils Lake?
Devils Lake is such a unique place of established legacies and being a hub for travel that all sorts of people walk through the library doors, which makes every day different and exciting. It situates us very well to serve Ramsey County and the surrounding areas to the best of our abilities, being the largest library between Grand Forks and Minot.
Why is the Lake Region Public Library a Chamber Member?
LRPL has been a Chamber member for decades because of the relationships and opportunities it affords our unique community establishment. The library is not a revenue-driven business, but we have many connections with businesses and entrepreneurs in the region that the Chamber has been instrumental in helping us forge. The networking and educational events are helpful, friendly, and FUN- LRPL will be a Chamber member for many more years, that's for sure!
Tell us something about the Library!
Fun fact: LRPL does accept gently used books as donations all year long, except for the two weeks leading up to and following the semi-annual book sales (held in April and October). However, we DO NOT accept textbooks, books with any sort of damage, encyclopedias, or otherwise dated or obsolete materials.
How has the Library changed in the last year?
This past year has almost completely changed the Lake Region Public Library, not only the physical feel inside but the atmosphere right from the moment you walk in the door! We've updated interior paint, color-coded signage lays out the collection, we established a teen area, the Community Room has been outfitted with much-needed technology upgrades, the facility is completely accessible, and the children's area is full of light and life and color. It feels like a strange day to have a quiet moment in the library, though it is still a plenty peaceful place to hang out, get work done, and peruse the shelves!
What specials or events can be found at the Lake Region Public Library for the month of July?
The Summer Reading Program for both youth and adults will wrap up on July 25th! Be sure to log all your reading before then and turn in your completed logs starting Monday, July 28 to be entered in our grand prize drawings.
