Spring has officially touched down in North Dakota, and according to Landon Blanchield at Woodland Resort, the landscape is changing fast. With temperatures climbing into the 50s, the ice fishing gear is being swapped for long rods and casting reels. While the big lake is transitioning, the "open water" itch is finally being scratched.

Current Conditions & Stats

  • Air Temperature: Highs reaching into the 50s.
  • Ice Status: Ice fishing season is officially closed; main lake ice is rapidly deteriorating.

Landon’s Outlook: From the Coulees to the Skies

The shift from ice to open water is always an exciting time at Woodland Resort. As the snow melts, the coulees and bridges become the hotspots. We’re already seeing those aggressive northern pike pushing into the moving water. If you’re hunting for walleye, patience is key—they are typically about two weeks behind the pike, but the wait won't be long.

It’s not just about the fishing, though. The "sheet water" (shallow standing water in the fields) is perfect right now, drawing in huge numbers of snow geese. Whether you're here to cast a line or witness the spring migration, the next few weeks are going to be busy.
