Conditions on Devils Lake, North Dakota, are looking fantastic! Recent heavy rains north and west have bumped lake levels up roughly a foot since early June. That extra water brings healthy weed growth, excellent spawning habitat, and fantastic fishing across the basin.

Current Conditions & Pattern

  • Water Temperatures: Hovering in the cool 71°F–76°F range.
  • Fish Depth: Surprisingly shallow for late July! Anglers are finding abundant walleye, perch, and white bass under 20 feet (with plenty active right around 10 feet).
  • Shore Fishing: Exceptional. Deep drop-offs (10–20 ft) near shorelines mean bank anglers can easily target active fish.
  • Excellent water levels: Devils Lake water levels have risen recently compared to other bodies that are lower than usual. 

 

Proven Tactics

If you want consistent success putting fish in the livewell, stick to the fundamentals:

  • Bottom Bouncers & Spinners: The absolute go-to method right now. Run a 1 oz to 1.5 oz bottom bouncer with a ~3-foot leader, paired with half a nightcrawler or a leech.
  • Tough Bites: Switch to a plain hook behind your bottom bouncer if the bite gets lethargic.
  • Target Structures: Focus on edges—specifically old shoreline transitions, weed edges, and sunken gravel roadbeds.

 

Fishery Health Check: Livewells are packed with freshwater shrimp, minnows, and red worms. Plus, there are massive numbers of young-of-the-year perch, white bass, and 8-to-10-inch walleye. The future of Devils Lake is looking extremely bright!
