Gift Guide 2021: Shop Local for Everyone on Your List!

Need some ideas for gift-giving this holiday season? Don’t worry. From tiny tots to Grandma and Grandpa - we’ve got you covered!

Babies and Toddlers

Babies and little ones are always fun to shop for, and Rilos & Mimi in Downtown Devils Lake is the perfect place to grab some gifts for the youngest people on your list.  From reusable snack bags to cozy clothing and adorable toys, this is your one-stop shop for all of the things a baby or tot would need.  Their business hours are 11 am - 6 pm on Thursdays, and 10 am - 3 pm on Saturdays.  Can’t make it to the store? Their online shop is always open, and shipping is always free - no code needed!

Once you’ve hit up Rilos & Mimi, head on down 4th street to Lamotte’s for more great ideas for those precious babes.  Trendy dinnerware, bamboo blankets, plush toys . . . the list goes on and on at Lamotte’s.  They have something for everyone’s tastes, and they’ll even wrap it up for you - all you have to do is put that gift under the tree!

Grade School Kids

Have an older kid on your list? Dairy Queen gift cards are sure to be a hit! After all, how many kids would turn down a Dilly Bar or a Blizzard? Not many that we know!

Once you’ve grabbed those gift cards, get yourself over to Xtreme Signs & Graphix for a cool cup, school embroidered apparel or a custom bag with their name on it. You won’t just find gifts for kids, either!

Since you’re downtown, you may as well make a stop at Creative Impressions! Kids love to show school pride, and Creative Impressions can do it all - sweatshirts, t-shirts, caps, mugs and more - the perfect place to shop for hometown gear.

Teenagers

If there is one place in Devils Lake that is universally loved by teenagers, it is The Liquid Bean. This Devils Lake institution has been a favorite place for kids to grab a bite and a burst of caffeine before and after school for nearly 30 years.  This one is a no-brainer, folks - grab a Bean gift card for that stocking - it will surely be appreciated! In need of another idea? Check out the Lake Region State College bookstore! Besides the LRSC and Royals gear, they have so much more!!

Mom, Wife, or Girlfriend

The best gifts come in small packages, and the best place to go in Devils Lake for a little something special is definitely Ritter Huesgen Jewelers. Established in 1886, this downtown gem has over a century under their belt helping us show loved ones how much they are appreciated. With gifts starting at just $15.99, there is something for every budget. Not seeing anything in store that fits your special lady’s taste? Don’t fret! They can order something perfect, just for you.

Maybe you’re looking for a way to give Mom a break? The Ranch Steakhouse has got you covered. The Ranch has been serving up quality steaks, seafood and more in the Lake Region for 76 years, so they know a thing or two about a great night out. Stop in for their happy hour and grab a gift certificate on your way out; Mom will be happy you did.

Dad, Husband, or Boyfriend

Guys can be tough to buy for, which is most likely why they end up unwrapping socks and ties every year - it’s practical and you know the gift will be put to use.  But we’ve got a few gift ideas other than the old standbys we think the men in your life will appreciate.

A gift card from Bjornson’s Tesoro on Highway 2 would definitely come in handy. We don’t know anyone that wouldn’t like to find a “fill on fuel” and a car wash or two under the tree. Pop inside and grab your guy’s favorite snack to wrap that gift card up with - how easy is that?

Gerrell’s Sports Center downtown is always a great place to shop for men of all ages.  Maybe Dad’s winter boots have seen better days? Gerrell’s has you covered. Are his gloves looking a little worse for wear? Gerrell’s has you covered. Wondering how he can even see out of those scuffed up sunglasses? Gerrell’s clearly has you covered.  There is something for every guy on your list at Gerrell’s -  they absolutely have you covered.

Is that guy on your list somewhat of a grill master? Drop in at Newby’s Ace Hardware in the City Plaza for all sorts of goodies for grilling and smoking all year round.  Newby’s carries Traeger, Big Green Egg, and Weber grills, smokers and accessories. They also have lots of spices and seasonings for everything from meat to veggies. What a delicious gift idea!

Grandma

Grandmas have been making the holidays extra special for the ones they love for generations.  We all have fond memories of handmade gifts, baked treats, and dishes full of candy that seems to only exist at Grandma’s house.   We love Home of Economy on Highway 2 for gifts that Grandma will find useful. Home of Economy carries a nice selection of specialty kitchen wares for lefse, krumkake, and other Scandinavian goods.  Not sure exactly what she might want? Grab a gift card and wrap it up with a Yeti mug - they have lots of sizes and colors to choose from.

Another lovely gift option for Grandma is a Christmas centerpiece.  Krantz’s Floral in the Holiday Mall on College Drive, Devils Lake can create something festive and beautiful Grandma will enjoy starting at just $40, and they’ll deliver it right to her door.

Grandpa

Time spent with grandparents is truly something to be cherished. Life is busy and hectic, spending time with the ones we hold dear is so important.  Gift cards to the Cedar Inn, Whitehouse Cafe, or your grandpa’s favorite lunch spot with a promise to meet for lunch once or twice a month would be something special for both of you.  Grandpa like to fish? Ed’s Bait Shop can hook you up with bait and off sale before you head out to the ice for some quality time together.  Maybe Grandpa is handy with tools? Stop in to Leon’s Building Center for a gift card that can be used to purchase supplies for a project you can work on together.  The memories will live on long past the holidays.

Host & Hostess

Will you be a guest for Christmas this year? Don’t show up empty handed! Devils Lake Greenhouse has a gorgeous selection of poinsettias perfect for your generous hosts. A Christmas centerpiece is also a nice gift idea, be sure to have it delivered a few days in advance so room can be made on the table for your gift.

Maybe wine and spirits are more your speed? Lakes Liquors has an excellent selection of all of the season’s best libations. If the task of choosing the right bottle seems daunting, their friendly staff will help you choose something that will be a hit with friends and family for the holidays.

Teachers

Last, but certainly not least: teachers! We are thankful for the work that teachers do in our children’s lives all year round, and the holidays are a fun time to show how much they are appreciated.  A gift card to Dunn Brothers or Coffee Connection would be a nice gesture, and they can swing through the drive through for a cup of ambition on their way to school in the morning.  Not sure if coffee is their thing? Decorated Wearables can whip up a ‘#1 Teacher’ shirt or sweatshirt in no time. Maybe you’d like to pamper them a bit more?  A gift certificate to a salon would be a great choice. Not sure which salon they visit? No problem -  those gift certificates can be used for product as well, so pick one up wherever you like to go!

No matter who you have to buy for this year, we hope you do your best to shop small and shop local! When in doubt, Devils Lake Chamber Bucks make a great gift! They spend like cash in town and are accepted at enough businesses to give them great options to spend.

The Devils Lake Visitor Center also offers an array of Devils Lake gear. From mugs, to blankets, to sweatshirts, shirts and hats – we offer something for everyone. The gift shop is open Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
