Featuring Insights from Pat Kalmerton
As the calendar flips and the North Dakota air takes on that unmistakable crispness, many anglers start thinking about putting the boat in storage. But if you ask pro angler Pat Kalmerton, he’ll tell you that some of the best fishing of the year is just getting started.
Whether the docks are coming out or the first skim of ice is forming in the shallows, Devils Lake remains a powerhouse for walleye, perch, and pike. We sat down with Pat to get the scoop on how to tackle this transition period and why you shouldn't hang up the rods just yet.
The "Transition" Strategy: Don't Let the Calendar Fool You
One of the biggest mistakes anglers make is assuming the bite "shuts down" once the water temps drop. According to Pat, the fish aren't going anywhere—they’re just shifting their priorities.
- Current is King: As the lake begins its seasonal shift, focus on bridge areas and inflows. These "current zones" stay oxygenated and often hold slightly more stable temperatures, acting as magnets for active walleye.
- The Shoreline Shift: When the docks come out, the shore fishing heats up. You don't need a $60,000 rig to catch trophy fish right now. Pat emphasizes that some of the most consistent late-fall action happens within casting distance of the bank.
Pat’s Pro Tips for Success
If you're heading out this week, keep these three tactics in your back pocket:
- Slow Your Roll: In colder water, a fish’s metabolism slows down. They won't chase a fast-moving bait like they did in July. Use a slow, methodical retrieve and give them time to commit.
- Go Big or Go Home: Interestingly, this year has seen a surge in "oversized" fish. Pat notes that more walleyes over 27 inches are being reported than usual. Don't be afraid to upsize your presentation to tempt a true Devils Lake giant.
- Low Light, High Action: The best bites are often occurring during the "magic hour"—early morning and late evening. As the sun dips, fish feel more comfortable moving out of deep cover and into the shallows to feed.
Looking Ahead: The Big 5-0!
While the open water bite is still humming, the buzz is already building for the summer of 2026. Pat Kalmerton and legendary guide Johnnie Candle recently highlighted the upcoming 50th Annual Devils Lake Chamber Fishing Tournament (June 26, 2026).
"Anything that lasts for 50 years... you know you're doing something right," says Johnnie Candle.
With a projected prize pool of over $65,000 and a first-place payout of $6,500, it’s the ultimate celebration of the Devils Lake community. Plus, every registered angler scores a custom Aftco 50th Anniversary pullover.
