When mid-August rolls around, outdoorsmen face a tough choice: do you pull out the shotgun for early waterfowl, or hit the water while the late-summer fishing peak is in full swing?

At Devils Lake, North Dakota, you don't have to choose.

We sat down with Eric Strub, professional guide for All Flocked Up Outdoors and Perch Patrol, to discuss why Devils Lake is the premier destination for a fall "Cast & Blast"—and how you can score a trip of a lifetime this season.

Guide Insights with Eric Strub

(Listen in as Eric shares what makes early-season hunting and fishing on Devils Lake so special, along with vital scouting advice for hunters.)

"Hey there, this is Eric Strub with All Flocked Up Outdoors and Perch Patrol up in Devils Lake, North Dakota.

I'd like to take a second to talk with you about our upcoming goose season. Our early Canada goose season is one of the first seasons open in North America—a really exciting opportunity for sportsmen looking to get a little early wing shooting in. We have a 15-bird-a-day limit with 45 in possession.

It’s gonna be a great season. The crops are just starting to come down. The key thing you need to watch is electronic vs. physical posting—the laws here in North Dakota have changed a bit over the last few years. To navigate online posting, use an app like OnX Hunt. It usually gives you the landowner and contact information if they want hunters out there. Or, the other route is hiring a guide like myself who knows the area and already has the land tied up.

Another exciting part is that you can make this a Cast & Blast trip. We’re entering the fall fishing phase, and the walleye bite right now is amazing. I’m just getting off the lake getting ready to gear up for hunting, but the fishing is just really good right now. It’s a great opportunity to get the best of both worlds.

One other thing I'd like to remind you is that winter booking is open, and ice fishing isn't far off! It's a really good time to start planning your winter trip now. We’re at record-high walleye numbers in the lake, and it’s a great time to capitalize.

Once again, this is Eric Strub with All Flocked Up Outdoors and Perch Patrol. Hope you have a great day, and I hope to see you soon!"
